MC2BackUp Post 1949 Why People Keep Trying to Erase the Hollywood Sign?

From Google Maps

The Hollywood Sign might be one of the most recognizable things on Earth. In Los Angeles, it's also one of the most visible. You can see it from a plane as you glide into LAX. You can see it from a car as you drive up the 101 freeway. But a group of people who live near the sign are trying to hide it, even as it looms in the hills, in plain sight.

By removing it from Google Maps.

MC2BackUp Post 1946 NFL’s Bills Offer $10, Tickets to Buffalo Snow Shovelers

The Buffalo Bills are offering $10 per hour and tickets to this weekend’s game against the New York Jets to anyone willing to help shovel 220,000 tons of snow.

That is, of course, if they can make it to the National Football League team’s stadium with their shovels.

The Nov. 23 game at the Bills’ Ralph Wilson Stadium is still scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff, even though some areas near Buffalo have already received at least 5 feet of snow and a lake effect snow warning is in effect until tomorrow morning, according to the Weather Channel. Another 2 inches to 4 inches of snow per hour is expected in some areas today.

MC2BackUp Post 1945 Windows 1.0 wasn't exactly a huge win

The first version of Microsoft Windows will be knocking on the door of its third decade Thursday when it turns the ripe old age of 29 — well past retirement in software years, given that Microsoft officially put it out to pasture in December of 2001. Still, looking back at Windows 1.0 offers exactly what its name implies: A window into how things used to be, and, in a way, how little has changed.

From:  http://time.com

First announced in 1983, Microsoft Windows 1.0 wouldn’t make it to the consumer market for another two years — making it one of the first pieces of software to be dismissed as “vaporware,” a term actually coined by a Microsoft engineer a year before the Windows announcement, as a disparaging title bestowed upon a product that’s announced but never sees the light of day.

MC2BackUp Post 1944 The WIKI Numbers to Get Big Hero 6 Made

(It’s a bit like) Blade Runner, but contained to a few square blocks. You see the skyscrapers contrasted with the hills." The reason why Disney wanted to merge Tokyo (which is where the comic book version takes place) with San Francisco was partly because San Francisco had not been used by Marvel before, partly because of all the city's iconic aspects, and partly because they felt its aesthetics would blend well with Tokyo. To create San Fransokyo as a detailed digital simulation of an entire city, Disney purchased the actual assessor data for the entire city and county of San Francisco. The final city contains over 83,000 buildings and 100,000 vehicles.

A software program called Denizen was used to create over 700 distinctive characters that populate the city, another one named Bonzai was responsible for the creation of the city’s 250,000 trees, while a new rendering system called Hyperion offered new illumination possibilities, like light shining through a translucent object (i.e., Baymax's vinyl covering).

Development on Hyperion started in 2011 and was based upon research into multi-bounce complex global illumination originally conducted at Disney Research in Zürich. Disney in turn had to assemble a new supercomputing cluster just to handle Hyperion's immense processing demands, which consists of over 2,300 Linux workstations distributed across four data centers (three in Los Angeles and one in San Francisco). Each workstation, as of 2014, included a pair of 2.4 GHz Intel Xeon processors, 256 GB of memory, and a pair of 300 GB solid-state drives configured as a RAID Level 0 array (i.e., to operate as a single 600 GB drive).

This was all backed by a central storage system with a capacity of five petabytes, which holds all digital assets as well as archival copies of all 54 Disney Animation films.

Big Hero 6 premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival on October 23, 2014 and at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in 3D on October 31, 2014. It was theatrically released in the United States on November 7, 2014, and was met with positive reviews.

Putinpedia? Russia will create ‘alternative to Wikipedia’

amid Putin Internet crackdown.

Harvard University doesn’t trust it. Foes of Internet trolls and “Internet rage” shun it. And to those who sneer at “the dumbness of crowds,” it will never compete with Encyclopedia Britannica. Heck: If you want to read more about the scorn for Wikipedia, check out the Wikipedia entry “Criticism of Wikipedia.”

After today, Russian President Vladimir Putin will warrant citation in that entry, if he’s not there by the time you read this. The Russian government has announced it will create a “regional electronic encyclopedia” to serve as a counterweight to Wikipedia.

MC2BackUp Post 1943 Is Hasbro interest in Dreamworks Just a Pipe dream

Hasbro Is Said to Be in Talks to Buy

DreamWorks Animation

From:  http://dealbook.nytimes.com

Shrek could soon share a home with the Transformers and little ponies like Fluttershy and Twilight Sparkle if their corporate parents are able to seal a deal.

The toymaker Hasbro is in advanced talks to buy DreamWorks Animation, potentially gaining a new big-screen outlet for its wares, people briefed on the matter said on Wednesday.

Should a deal be reached — and these people cautioned that talks were continuing and might still fall apart — it would mark a new chapter for DreamWorks Animation. It would also come more than a month after the studio held talks with another prospective buyer, the Japanese telecommunications company SoftBank.

If you have not read through my article that dives into the intricacies of the 14nm process and the architectural changes coming with Broadwell, then I would highly recommend that you do so before diving any further into this review. Our Intel Core M Processor: Broadwell Architecture and 14nm Process Reveal story clearly explains the "how" and "why" for many of the decisions that determined the direction the Core M 5Y70 heads in.

MC2BackUp Post 1941 Sharp's new display shows the pixel-density race is far from over

If you have spectacularly good eyesight, the highest pixel-density you can see is about 500 pixels-per-inch (ppi). But that trifling little detail isn't stopping display manufacturers and marketers, no sir! Sharp just revealed an iPhone 4s-sized (4.1-inches) IGZO LCD screen with WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) resolution. That works out to 736ppi -- a quantum leap above Samsung's Galaxy S5 LTE-A, the current smartphone champ at 576ppi. You'll see devices with the screen starting in 2016, but it may lose its density crown before then anyway. Samsung is rumored to have a 5.9-inch, 4K Super AMOLED display with 747ppi in the works.
Better eat those carrots.

Android Engineer Explains Why Mashing “Check for Updates” on Nexus Devices

Isn’t Helping You

When it comes to rollouts of new software and OTA updates, Google is all about staged

rollouts. As the Android engineer, Dan Morrill explains, the update process begins in

percentages, and typically only 1% of devices will see the OTA update within the first

24-48 hours of the update being live. In this timeframe, Google works on any incoming

bug reports or major issues, then ups the percentage to about 25% of devices. Once

things are rolling smoothly, within a week 50% of devices will see the update, followed

by 100% about 2-3 weeks after the update announcement.

--------------------------------------

Yeah, I do this.

So it's a game of percentages just like the stock market and Vegas, huh.

Space probe scores a 310-million-mile bull's-eye

with comet landing

London (CNN) -- Imagination became reality Wednesday when a mechanical space traveler called the Philae probe plunked down on its target, a comet with a much less romantic name -- 67P --
some 310 million miles from Earth.

European Space Agency scientists and executives high-fived and hugged each other when the landing was confirmed. Spacecraft have crashed into comets before, but this is the first soft, or controlled landing, in history.

After a historic but awkward comet landing, the robot probe Philae is now stable and sending pictures - but there are concerns about its battery life.

After two bounces, the first one about 1km back out into space, the lander settled in the shadow of a cliff, 1km from its target site.

It may be problematic to get enough sunlight to charge its batteries.

Launched in 2004, the European Space Agency (Esa) mission hopes to learn about the origins of our Solar System.

It has already sent back the first images ever taken

on the surface of a comet.

MC2BackUp Post 1939 In The World of small the Pi Gets Even smaller

Raspberry Pi's new computer is somehow

even smaller and cheaper

From:    http://www.engadget.com

Everyone's favorite mini-computer has just gotten even smaller. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is today introducing the Model A+, a revamped version of its low-end Model A board priced at just $20 (£20 in the UK). While the processor and RAM -- a Broadcom BCM2835 SoC and 256MB, to be specific -- remain the same as its predecessor, the new model is far smaller at just 65mm (2.6 inches) in length versus the old model's 86mm (3.4 inches). It also draws less power and has improved audio circuitry.
