Android applications will be able to run on Windows 10

During the company’s Build 2015 developer conference, Microsoft announced that both Android and iOS applications will be able to run on the upcoming Windows 10 platform.

Using the new Project Islandwood (iOS) and Project Astoria (Android) development kits, developers will be able to port their applications and games to Windows universal apps.

Microsoft is letting Android developers use Java and C++ code on Windows 10, allowing applications to be quickly and easily compiled for the platform. Since the majority of the code being used by Android devs is being recycled, this will save app makers a ton of time and money in the long run.

Today at Build, Microsoft unveiled its first version of

Visual Studio for Mac and Linux.

The new tool, called Visual Studio Code, makes it easy to develop .NET code along with many other programming languages on Linux based systems.

It’s monumental for Microsoft as it marks the first time the company has ever made Visual Studio cross-platform, truly embracing those that it’s previously feuded with.

MC2 Post 2015 People Just Like their iPhones Bigger Too

Strong iPhone demand pushes Apple's sales -- again

Revenue in China helps boost the company to a record second quarter, but the iPad remains a weak spot for Apple.

From:    http://www.cnet.com

Consumers have been scooping up Apple's larger-screen smartphones -- the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus -- at record rates since they hit the market in September. But they've also stopped buying as many iPads, Apple's No. 2 moneymaker after its smartphones.

Graphene produces a working 3D holographic display

A wide viewing angle, full-colour, floating 3D display has been built using graphene-based materials.

A new effort from Australian universities looks like it could be the real deal, with materials made from the versatile carbon-based graphene as the key.

"While there is still work to be done, the prospect is of 3D images seemingly leaping out of the screens...without the need for cumbersome accessories such as 3D glasses," said Qin Li from Griffith University's School of Engineering, who conducted carbon-structure analysis for the research.

MC2 Post 2014 Getting started with Android Auto

From:    http://www.androidcentral.com

Android is everywhere. In your pocket. On your wrist. Occasionally (and unfortunately) on your face. In your living room. Even in your kitchen. And now Android is in your car. In 2014 Google announced Android Auto. And in 2015 it's become a reality.

Android Auto actually runs on your phone (Android 5.0 Lollipop and up), not your car stereo head unit. That means your phone is doing the heavy lifting — and using your data — and then pushing the Android Auto user interface to the display. There's a required separate Android Auto app, and Google Play Services does a lot of work here as well.

You plug your phone into the car via a standard

microUSB cable ... and that's it.

It (mostly) just works.

Just a minute......

Since I'm not a Fan of Lollipop 5.1 yet, and I have to say:

-------------------------------------

"Hold your horses Moondog."

Google has been struggling for 5 months Trying to get Lollipop to work on their Flagship Nexus legacy (older) devices and have so far struck out.  So with that I say: "Your mileage may vary on usefulness..."

You can now send directions and notes to your phone
via Google search

Sending info from your desktop to your Android phone
is just a Google search away

From:   http://www.theverge.com

If your Android device is updated and has the right settings enabled (see this help article for details  Link:  https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/6128427 ),  you can simply type "send a note to my phone" or "send directions to my phone" directly into the search bar. Doing so will open up a little Google Now-style card that will let you type in your note or specify the directions that you're looking for. Google will then send the data to your phone as a notification. Other than directions or notes, you can also send reminders, set an alarm, or instantly find the location of your phone directly from the Google search bar on your desktop.

The new feature can be seen as an extension of Google's
already-great syncing between its Chrome desktop browser
and its Android operating system.

MC2 Post 2011 A Robot Face only a mother could Love???

Hanson Robotics' Han the robot made his debut at the Global Sources Electronics Fair, where he interacted with visitors, holding eye contact and conversation.

From:    http://www.cnet.com

The newest member of the Hanson robot family, Han, is just extraordinary. Making his debut at the Global Sources Electronics Fair in Hong Kong -- one of the largest electronics fairs in the world -- the Frubber-faced fellow was the belle of the ball.

Mounted on a stationary clear body, through which viewers can see Han's electronic guts, the robot's face is the point of contact for interaction. It's programmed with pattern recognition software that, paired with a variety of cameras in its eyes and chest, allow the robot to recognise and interact with the person in front of it.

Google's Android Wear software will let you leave your phone at home (if there's Wi-Fi)

The search giant announces a handful of new features, including new capabilities that make a watch run independent of a phone, all ahead of the Apple Watch's launch on Friday.

Google announced new updates to Android Wear, including Wi-Fi capability.

Google wants to make smartwatches less dependent on smartphones.

For now, to use most smartwatches, you need to connect the device to your smartphone and keep your phone nearby. That's no longer going to be necessary for wrist-worn devices powered by Google's Android Wear software, the company said Monday. Instead, the devices will let you connect your watch to a Wi-Fi network and receive updates about emails and upcoming calendar appointments directly over the Internet.

You'll still need to allow your watch to pull information from your phone -- and have your phone connected to a cellular or Wi-Fi network -- but then you'll be able to receive notifications, send messages and use apps on your watch. That's no matter where your phone is -- and your phone and watch don't have to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

MC2 Post 2010 The Fast approaching world of Dongle Computers

That fit in the Palm of your hand.

After first showing up at CES 2013, Dell is finally shipping the Dell Wyse Cloud Connect HDMI dongle that turns any display into a PC.

Priced at $129, the Android-based Wyse dongle is slightly larger than a typical USB stick and gives you full access to Google Play’s app catalog. When you need to get some serious work done, Wyse integrates with desktop virtualization services from Citrix, Microsoft, and VMWare, as well as Dell’s own apps and files remote access solution, PocketCloud.

As you might have guessed from the description, the Wyse dongle is aimed at enterprises and other large organizations including educational institutions. But it’s easy to imagine how this device could appeal to anyone else who wants the power of a PC in their pocket without the hassle of lugging a laptop everywhere.

When you first slap the Wyse Cloud Connect dongle into a display via HDMI or MHL port you are greeted with an Android Jelly Bean home screen. You can then access Android apps installed on the device or fire up your remote desktop.

The biggest downside for business travelers is Wyse Cloud Connect requires you to bring your own keyboard and mouse.

Wyse can connect to peripherals via Bluetooth or you can alternate using a wired keyboard and mouse with the dongle’s single USB port. There’s also a micro SD card slot supporting up to 72GB expandable storage, 8GB onboard storage, and 1GB RAM.

For networking you’ve got Bluetooth and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and the device is powered by a Cortex-A9 SoC. The Wyse Cloud Connect dongle takes its name from Wyse Technology, a thin-client service provider Dell acquired in 2012.

Intel's Compute Stick is a dirt-cheap Windows PC
that fits in the palm of your hand

In November, Intel announced its Compute Stick—an entire PC inside the form factor of a Google Chromecast. Now it's ready to ship, and at just $149 for the Windows version.

Intel quietly announced at the Consumer Electronics Show here that the Compute Stick would ship in March. Two versions will be available: the Windows (with Bing) version, for $149, as well as a lower-powered Linux version for $89.

The stick will plug into the back of a smart TV or monitor “and bring intelligence to that,” said Kirk Skaugen, senior vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group at Intel, during the Intel investor conference in Santa Clara, California, which was webcast. The concept isn't new, of course. Amazon, Google, and others have dedicated streaming boxes squezed into the HDMI stick form factor, and Dell’s $129.99 Wyse Cloud Connect can turn a screen or display into a PC, gaming machine or streaming media player.

MC2 Post 2009 Apple Watch Launch Hits a Swiss Patent SNAG

Swiss launch of Apple Watch hit by patent issue

From:   http://www.investing.com

ZURICH (Reuters) - Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is not able to launch its new smartwatch in Switzerland until at least the end of this year because of an intellectual property rights issue, Swiss broadcaster RTS reported on its website.

The U.S. tech giant cannot use the image of an apple nor the word "apple" to launch its watch within Switzerland, the home of luxury watches, because of a patent from 1985, RTS reported, citing a document from the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property.

Industry watchers expect Apple to release a next-generation Apple TV set-top streamer later this year with a slew of upgrades, but the device might not support 4K high-definition content as some anticipated, according to a report published on Sunday.

Citing sources familiar with Apple's plans, BuzzFeed News reports the fourth-generation Apple TV will not support 4K content streaming at launch.

"4K is great, but it's still in its infancy," said an unnamed source.
