The French government today signaled that Uber's low-cost service,

UberPop, will be banned throughout the country as of New Years Day,

marking the latest in a series of regulatory setbacks for

the company. The news comes as three taxi unions blocked major

highways around Paris in protest against Uber and the "unfair

competition" it poses.

China's Xiaomi booked $56 million profit in 2013 -filing

The figure casts new light on the growth of a company that reached third place in just four years thanks to handsets lauded for balancing quality and affordability. Only this month did momentum finally stall when a patent challenge in India halted sales.
